Using Values Fit to Guide Self-Selection Decisions

Cubiks recently presented research at the Division of Occupational Psychology annual conference about our values-fit assessment, Cubiks Capture, on self-selection decisions. Capture asks job applicants to rate a series of images and phrases to assess their values, and then calculates a fit score between their values and the organisation. The applicant receives feedback on their level of fit, and then can choose whether to apply for the job or exit the process.

Our Research


We wanted to see how much this feedback influences the candidate’s decision to apply. To explore this, we asked over 600 participants aged between 16 and 30 to complete Capture. However, we fixed the level of fit they received, with equal numbers receiving feedback that they had high, average or low fit with the company’s values.

 

As you can see in the graph below, the level of fit they received had a strong impact on their intention to apply. Furthermore, the relationship between the feedback received and intention to apply was stronger when the individual generally felt that values-fit was an important part of their decision making process when applying for jobs.

 

Candidate Experience


We also took the opportunity to ask the participants about their experience using Capture, and their feedback certainly supported these findings:

  • “I thought the tool was different but in a good way. Helps me understand the company more, and seeing where we compare.”

  • “Thought provoking and insightful.”

  • “It is useful to receive feedback on your personal values to reconsider what really matters to you.”

  • “It’s a good way of seeing whether a certain job would suit you. I would rather know this so I could see what areas I feel differently about to the company I would be applying for.”

So what can we conclude from this?

 

The results of this research provide evidence for the usefulness of values-fit assessment in self-selection. It guides the applicants with the highest level of fit to apply to the organisation, and people enjoy taking the assessment and find it useful to aid their decision making.
